RIDING STABLE RD. TO ELLSMERE RD.

If you
take Riding Stable Rd. North
from Highway 17 it will take you behind Crystal Falls
and bring you out just South of Martin River (Ellsmere Rd.). This is a beautiful drive! But you can’t really do the drive the
opposite way coming from Ellsmere
Rd. travelling Westward because of a huge
culvert shown at the bottom of the page.
At the end of Riding Stable Rd. you will see
Lafarge’s Pit, just keep going…

Once you
cross over the first bridge you have to stick right or you will end up in Crystal Falls.

The
drive from Riding Stable Rd.
to Elsmere Rd.
takes you through what is known as the burn. Back in the 70’s there was a controlled
burn (fire) and so most of the area is now like a dead zone. Many new trees have been planted since
then but if you were to drive through you can still tell that the area was wiped
out by a fire. Here are a few
pictures below, although you really have to be there to get a clear view
and understanding of the area.

After
driving through the burn you will have to go through a few beaver dams,
shown below is Cally trying to break open one of the Dams which the beavers
worked so hard on!

The hill seen below is
really steep and nice and rocky too, you need low range for this one!

Then finally you’ll come to the culvert shown below, and as
mentioned above, it can easily be driven through going Eastward as you are
going downhill. However, if you were
traveling the opposite way you may get stuck!
