SANDY FALLS 2003

Anyone that has lived in Sturgeon for long enough has probably been to Sandy Falls at one point or another, and if you’ve been there then you must be aware that that the bridge has been removed for many years.  So you either have to walk from the culvert, go around it to the right if you have a small 4X4 pickup such as myself, or you can do a full circle around through the dump and come in upstream.  It’s only a 10 minute walk (2 minute drive) from the culvert to Sandy compared to a 20 minute drive going around upstream, however it’s worth the drive.  Above shows Cally standing in the box of my truck and a huge rusted old culvert behind him.  In the pictures below we’re standing in the culvert.

In this picture I’m passing through a little wash out on the way to Sandy going around from upstream

You can easily get stuck in a mud hole such as this one, even with a 4x4, and especially in the spring which is when this was picture was taken

After either crossing the culvert or entering from upstream you will have to head down the main trail for Sandy.  This trail has been washed out for many years with a huge mud hole that was approx. 1 1/2 ft. deep with soft mud/clay & had a ft. of water just sitting on top. It has become a real pain-in-the-ass to go around because it pulls you right into the center, so I decided to fix it and drain out the water.

It didn’t take too much work (approx. 8 hrs), and as you can see in the pictures it was muddy!  The ones below show it pretty much drained out and me standing at the end in what used to be 2-3 ft. of mud!  After we drained out the water we then filled in the hole with huge logs which we grabbed off the side of the old rail bed in a nearby marsh.

All that work really paid off though as now we can drive right to Sandy!

Ahhhh…. and now to enjoy the fruits of our labour…

Nevertheless there was still some work to do.  The rock in the back of my truck shown below probably weighs about 300 lbs or more, and we rolled it out of the bush and on to the rail bed, then threw it in the box which wasn’t easy!  We also grabbed a big log so now there are seats for around the fire.  We only hope that others that come here will respect the area and not destroy or burn anything!

Of course I bring my own chair though.  Much more relaxing!
